On January 20, 1968 at the Houston Astrodome, in front of 52,693 fans and a prime time television audience, the AP #1 UCLA Bruins and the AP #2 University of Houston Cougars played in the Game of the Century. The Cougars pulled the upset, 71–69, ending the Bruins' 47-game winning streak. Elvin Hayes scored 39 points and had 15 rebounds while limiting Lew Alcindor to just 15 points. The Game of the Century was the first NCAA regular season game broadcast nationwide in prime time. The game established college basketball as a sports commodity on television and paved the way for the modern "March Madness" television coverage.
